Cagliari are Likely to Stroll Past Perugia in the Coppa Italia

Cagliari and Perugia will meet here in the Coppa Italia as Italian football gets its first real taste of 2022/23 action with the showdown taking place at the Sardegna Arena between two sides from Serie B.

It was a tough season from start to finish from Cagliari in Serie A last season as the club ended up getting relegated from the top flight back into Serie B for the first time in six years.

In truth, they were wrapped in a relegation battle all campaign long, and there was little hope in them getting out of their predicament.

Cagliari won just six games all season long in Serie A in 2021/22, with them drawing 12 and losing 20 times - only Venezia who finished bottom managed to lose more across the entire campaign.

What's more, from 38 games, stunningly, they only managed to net 34 times in what was a dreadful effort on the attacking front from the 18th-placed side.

Cagliari also managed to concede 68 goals in Serie A last time out, and with just six wins all season, there was nothing to shout about.

At the same time, they were slightly unfortunate in their relegation, given how Salernitana were bottom of the table for much of the season and managed to pip their way out of the bottom three in the end.

It was also a topsy-turvy preseason for Cagliari. They played out just three games all summer long, registering two wins and one defeat.

They managed to beat Olbia 3-0 in the first game, before beating the impressive Strasbourg 2-1 in their next game of the preseason.

Cagliari then played out an incredible 6-2 game against Leeds United, but in conceding six, the Italian side do now come into this game in the losing column and off the back of torrid defensive effort.

Perugia, as opposed to Cagliari, are well equipped to playing in Serie B with them entering yet another season in the second tier of Italian football. They finished eighth last time out with 14 wins from the 38 games, and registered the second-best defensive record in the league with an incredible 32 goals conceded.

At the same time, the club lost just eight times in Serie B, but they scored only 40 goals in the season too. There is a bit more hope for Perugia in this season, but up against Cagliari in the Coppa Italia, they don't have the easiest first game out there.

Forebet predicts a win for Cagliari and for the game to see under 2.5 goals.
