Roma will host Lecce in the Coppa Italia round of 16 fixture on Thursday night. The winner of this tie will face off with Internazionale or Empoli in the quarterfinals.

Jose Mourinho’s team hasn’t won the Coppa Italia since 2008. In Mourinho style, this is a competition he will want to win to inspire the Giallorossi for next season.

Lecce have never won the Coppa Italia and will hope to cause a major shock with a win over Roma. The Serie B team was the only non-Serie football club left in the Coppa Italia prior to the beginning of the round of 16.

Roma are coming off of a 1-0 win over Cagliari in Serie A. the win for the Giallorossi ended a three-match Serie A winless streak. Mourinho’s team has had major consistency issues this campaign.

Lecce have already played twice in the Coppa Italia achieving wins over Parma and Spezia. The Lupi are on a two-match winning streak heading into the Coppa Italia round of 16. Last time out, Lecce defeated Pordenone 1-0.

Roma claimed eight wins across the last 10 matches with Lecce. The Giallorossi lost a mere one time to Lecce across those 10 fixtures. Roma outscored Lecce 24-11 in those 10 meetings.

Five players could be missing on Thursday night for Mourinho. Lorenzo Pellegrini has a thigh injury that will rule him out until February. Stephan El Shaarawy is a doubt due to a muscle problem. Chris Smalling is also a doubt after testing positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Mourinho will be without the duo of Ebrima Darboe and Amadou Diawara. Mourinho should play a strong squad so expect Tammy Abraham to start in attack.

Roma recently added Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sergio Oliveira on loan. The Giallorossi continue to be the most active team in Serie A in terms of signing players. Both Maitland-Niles and Oliveira could start.

Lecce coach Marco Baroni has the team fighting for Serie A promotion. Due to this, Baroni could alter his side and rest key players.

Baroni has four players on the injured and absent list as Luca Paganini, Brayan Vera, Marco Bleve, and Fabio Pisacane are all doubts to play.

Roma have a great head-to-head record against Lecce. The Giallorossi should once again claim a victory versus the Lupi. The Roma’s poor goals conceded record (40), they should concede to an inspired Lecce.

In the end, Mourinho will lead Roma to the win and qualification to the quarterfinals. Both teams should score with over 2.5 goals scored.
