Anybody who saw Schalke play towards the end of last season in the Bundesliga is unlikely to be surprised by the fact that the Royal Blues are in relegation trouble this season.
However, even by the poor standards of the end of last season, the current campaign has been a disaster.
As Manuel Baum’s side prepare to welcome Hoffenheim to the Veltins Arena on Saturday afternoon, Schalke sit bottom of the table, having garnered just four points all season.
A 3-0 defeat at Hertha Berlin last time out means that Schalke are now 30 league games without a victory, which by any Bundesliga team’s standards is a poor record. The defeat leaves the team from Gelsenkirchen six points adrift of the relegation play-off spot.
The fact the home side still have hope says more about the quality of the teams directly above them than anything about Schalke.
The Royal Blues have had major problems at both ends of the pitch this season. However, the fact that they have failed to score in four of their last five league matches has been a big factor in their lowly position in the Bundesliga table.
Hoffenheim have not had a great season by any stretch of the imagination, as the visitors are currently just five points clear of the relegation play-off spot.
Sebastian Hoeness’ team head into this game on the back of a run of three defeats in their last four Bundesliga matches, having suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat against Freiburg last time out.
The Freiburg game was another high-scoring game for the visitors in the German top-flight, as seven of their last nine Bundesliga outings have produced over 2.5 goals.
A game like this should be an opportunity for Schalke to get back on track. However, considering their form for most of 2020, it is not surprising that Forebet predicts that Hoffenheim will record a victory.
