Lyon to qualify for quarterfinals of Coupe de France

The Coupe de France moves into the round of 16 this week with a slate of cup games taking place in France. Ligue 1 rivals Nice and Lyon will clash on the south coast of France with both teams seeking a spot in the quarterfinals.

Not only will these teams play on Thursday night in the Coupe de France, but they will meet in league play on Sunday. The two sides will lock horns in both matches at the Allianz Riviera Stadium.

Lyon are unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions. Manager Rudi Garcia took over the reins at the club in October and has since improved on the team’s form.

Patrick Vieira’s Nice are unbeaten in 12 of their last 13 games in all competitions. One of Nice’s biggest issues since the defensively minded Vieira arrived at the club has been goals. Nice have tallied 36 goals in all competitions which is an average of 1.5 per match.

Nice’s defence has been good with 33 goals conceded. That is an average of 1.38 strikes against per game. Nice have been far better at home where they have scored 25 times and allowed 14 goals.

Lyon have tickled the nets 63 times in all competitions. Thirty-four of those goals came away from home, making them a side that can surely find the net away versus Nice. Lyon’s defence has been good away from home as well allowing just 20 scores.

These teams met in November in Lyon with Nice pulling off an away win, 1-0. Nice have actually won their last three matches versus Lyon in Ligue 1.

Lyon striker Moussa Dembele has tallied 17 goals in all competitions and is being tracked by clubs in the Premier League. Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay has added 14 strikes in all competitions.

Nice have seen most of their goals come from Wylan Cyprien (eight) and Kasper Dolberg (six). Vieira will hope his top scorers can find the back of the net and continue the team’s good form.

Lyon have forward Maxwel Cornet in-form after he scored versus Toulouse at the weekend. It was reported on Tuesday that Lyon are on the verge of signing Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes. He won’t be ready to play until Sunday at the earliest.

Although Nice have played well recently versus Lyon, the visitors should get the goals to win the game and move into the quarterfinals. Expect both teams to score and over 2.5 goals on the French Riviera as Lyon win.
