St Patrick's Athletic trail F91 Dudelange 2-1 ahead of their Conference League first qualifying round second leg match.
F91 Dudelange will visit Richmond Park on Thursday, seeking to keep their one-goal deficit.
The Luxembourger club controlled the first leg, with goals on either side of halftime from Oege-Sietse van Lingen and Yahcuroo Roemer. F91 Dudelange led 2-0 until second-half stoppage time when St Patrick’s Athletic’s Mark Doyle scored in the third minute.
St Patrick’s are in the middle of the Ireland Premier Division campaign. The Saints are second in the standings and four points off league leader Shamrock Rovers.
St Patrick’s squad’s fitness is likely better going into the second leg, but league obligations could prevent them from picking up a win at home.
F91 Dudelange won’t begin the Luxembourg National Division season until later this month. Unlike St Patrick’s Athletic, which have played 25 league matches, F91 Dudelange’s squad is fresher.
Manager Jamath Shoffner took charge of F91 Dudelange ahead of the Champions League qualifying rounds. He goes into the game, with no injuries and a fully fit squad. All of F91 Dudelange’s work in the transfer market has been free transfers.
Roemer was side from Dutch club VVV Venlo. He should start in attack once more after scoring in the first leg. Shoffner prefers a 3-1-4-2 formation. It is very attack-minded, with six players pushing forward.
St Patrick’s Athletic manager Jon Daly joined the club in May 2023. Three players are on the injury list going into the fixture. Goalkeeper Danny Rogers is unlikely to play due to a broken finger.
Centre-back Tom Grivosti is a doubt due to a cruciate ligament injury. Fellow centre-back Joe Redmond could miss the game following a hamstring injury.
Midfielder Chris Forrester leads St Patrick’s with 11 goals. Right-winger Jake Mulraney, who joined from Orlando City in January, leads the team with six assists.
Daly will likely use a 4-4-2 just like in the first leg. The manager uses a double six to protect the back four. Mulraney started the first leg in attack next to Adam Murphy. Forrester will likely start on the left side of midfield once more.
St Patrick’s Athletic reached the Conference League third qualifying round last season. There, they lost to CSKA Sofia. The Saints have never reached the group stage of a European competition.
Last season, F91 Dudelange were knocked out of the Conference League in the playoff stage. They were defeated by Lech Poznan.
The second leg should be a difficult game for F91 Dudelange playing away in Ireland. The teams should draw 2-2, with F91 Dudelange reaching the next round on aggregate.
