Ligue 1 strugglers Strasbourg and Angers meet in Coupe de France clash
3667

The Coupe de France Round of 64 gets underway on Friday, with the bottom two teams in Ligue 1 – Strasbourg and Angers – facing off at La Meinau.

Angers sit rock bottom of the Ligue 1 table on eight points, while Strasbourg find themselves second from bottom with 11 points to their name.

Naturally, both sides will be focusing on avoiding relegation from the top flight this season. But they will also be eager to enjoy a positive cup run. Who will come out on top at La Meinau?

Let’s start by looking at the hosts, Strasbourg, who have suffered back-to-back defeats since the World Cup break – falling to PSG (2-1) and Troyes (3-2).

That means they have failed to win any of their previous seven competitive games, registering three draws and four losses.

When you look at the bigger picture, Strasbourg have only managed to win one of their 17 games this season – recording eight draws and eight losses along the way.

Although Strasbourg have picked up fewer Ligue 1 victories than anyone else this term, they can take confidence from the fact that Angers are rooted to the foot of the table.

Indeed, Angers have lost 13 of their 17 league outings this season – picking up two wins and two draws in the process.

Angers have the worst defensive record in Ligue 1, having conceded 37 goals (2.2 goals against per game). Worse still, only Ajaccio have scored fewer goals than Angers’ 16.

It is worth noting that Angers head into Friday’s clash on a nine-game losing streak, conceding over 1.5 goals on seven occasions in that time.

Having lost the 2017 Coupe de France final 1-0 to PSG, Angers don’t have fond memories of this competition. Can they change that this year?

Head-to-head: When these two sides met in Ligue 1 earlier this season, Strasbourg claimed a 3-2 away victory at Angers.

Angers have only managed to win three of their last ten games against Strasbourg, with Strasbourg winning three of the previous five meetings.

Team news: Strasbourg are currently without six first-team players due to injury: Karol Fila, Eiji Kawashima, Maxime Le Marchand, Thomas Delaine, Colin Dagba and Nordine Kandil.

Angers also have a number of injury absentees, with Ibrahim Amadou, Yahia Fofana, Ali Kalla and Ulrick Eneme-Ella expected to miss Friday’s clash.

Given that Strasbourg and Angers are both struggling at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, Friday’s game is destined to be a close-fought contest.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Strasbourg and Angers will play out a low-scoring draw inside 90 minutes.
