CFR Cluj to triumph in 1st leg at Shakhtyor Soligorsk

The 3rd qualifying round of the Europa Conference League also commences this week and the 1st leg ties of these fixtures features this upcoming clash between Belarusian hosts, Shakhtyor Soligorsk, and their Romanian visitors, CFR Cluj.
The two sides battle it out for a place in the group stage of this competition at the Yeni Sakarya Atatürk Stadyumu.
Shakhtyor Soligorsk were handed an early exit from the 1st qualifying round of the Champions League by Slovenian outfit, Maribor, losing 2-0 at home in the 2nd leg after holding Maribor to a creditable 0-0 draw away from home in the 1st leg.
The Belarus hosts therefore have another chance at a European campaign in the Europa Conference League.
And they will be in fairly confident mood following that loss to Maribor as Shakhtyor have won their subsequent three domestic league matches on the trot.
Belarus Premier League wins against Belshina, Slavia and Slutsk will give Shakhtyor a welcome boost.
But last season’s appearance in the Conference League was disappointing as they lost home and away legs to Fola Esch.
Onto CFR Cluj, and the Romanian visitors were fairly regular participants in the Champions League in previous seasons.
But their star has faded somewhat in recent times, culminating in their early exit from the Champions League in the 1st qualifying round, losing to Armenian side, Pyunik.
They too have another chance at European glory and reaching the group stage of this Europa Conference League though having safely navigated their way past Andorran club, Inter Club d’Escaldes, with a comprehensive 4-1 win on aggregate.
This solid victory in the previous round of this competition along with their weekend Romanian Liga 1 4-2 home win over Mioveni will also give CFR Cluj a much-needed and timely boost ahead of this 1st leg in Belarus.
The bigger picture also provides a fairly positive outlook for CFR Cluj as the visitors have suffered just the four defeats out of their last 18 matches across all competitions and includes no fewer than 11 wins within this promising sequence of results.
In last season’s Europa Conference League, CFR Cluj reached the group stage but finished bottom of Group D although just three defeats in their last 21 outings on the road in all competitions gives CFR Cluj a decent chance of a result in this 1st leg.
