Sweden’s Djurgarden have a slender lead over HNK Rijeka ahead of their second leg UEFA Conference League second qualifying round match on Thursday night.
Djurgarden are in excellent form ahead of the match on Thursday night at home. Along with defeating Rijeka in the first leg 2-1, Djurgarden are on a five-match winning streak in the Allsvenskan.
While the Swedish side is in the middle of the domestica campaign, Rijeka have not started the HNL league in Croatia. The Croatian team is still in preseason and are seeking a win to overcome Djurgarden’s narrow goal-lead.
Rijeka started the first leg well at home, scoring in the 13th minute. Haris Vuckic scored the opening goal to put the Croatians on top.
Djurgarden came from behind with a goal in the 37th minute from Hampus Finndell to level the score. After halftime, Victor Edvardsen scored on 54 minutes to put Djurgarden into the lead.
Rijeka manager Fausto Budicin took the job in July 2022. If he isn’t able to steer Rijeka into the Europa Conference League, he could be let go by the club. Budicin will hope Vuckic can get on the scoresheet once more.
The striker arrived this summer on a free transfer from Real Zaragoza. Vuckic should start the match and could play alongside Jorge Obregon in a 4-4-2 formation.
Rijeka signed Mario Vrancic from Stoke City on loan during the offseason. The signing was quite significant for a team that finished fourth in the HNL lats season.
Djurgarden manager Kim Bergstrand will hope for more of the same from his Swedish Allsvenskan leaders. Edvardsen got the match winner in the first leg. He goes into the game having scored six goals in the Allsvenskan this term.
In the first leg, Bergstand used a 4-3-3 formation with Edvardsen leading the line. Djurgarden’s last three games in all competitions finished with over 2.5 goals scored.
Rijeka will need to be at their very best in Sweden to overturn their current goal deficit. Djurgarden are likely to be too strong for the Croatians, however.
Being in the middle of the Allsvenskan season and showing such great form should help Djurgarden to an easy home win. In the Allsvenskan this season, Djurgarden has not lost at home posting a record of 7W-1D-0L.
Djurgarden should post a win over Rijeka with 3-0 scoreline. The Swedish side will punch their ticket to face off with either Sepsi or Olimpijaa Ljubljana.
