Low-scoring affair expected between Rijeka and Djurgardens

The 1st leg ties of the 2nd round qualifying round matches in this season’s Europa Conference League will be played on Thursday night and features this upcoming intriguing contest between Croatian side, HNK Rijeka, and their Swedish visitors, Djurgardens, when the two teams clash at the Stadion HNK Rijeka.
Thursday’s hosts, Rijeka, finished in a creditable 4th place at the end of last season’s Croatian HNL campaign and as such, qualified for the 2nd qualifying round of the Champions League where they’ll meet Swedish outfit, Djurgardens.
However, despite their lofty finish in the Croatian domestic top flight, Rijeka posted a mixed bag of results towards the end of the season which saw the hosts pick up just four wins out of their last 11 matches in all competitions.
Only two of these four wins were achieved on home soil at their Stadion HNK Rijeka as they collected victories over Osijek and Hrvatski Dragovoljac, while their last six home games yielded just two wins and suffered four defeats in the process.
In last season’s competition, Rijeka beat Gzira United and Hibernian before falling 2-0 at home to PAOK.
Swedish visitors, Djurgardens, are currently enjoying a promising campaign in the domestic Allsvenskan as the away side sit in 2nd place and just a point behind the league leaders, Hacken, as the Swedish top flight season is in full swing.
This may assist Djurgarden not only in terms of match-fitness but also the visitors’ confidence will be at a premium as the visitors have won five of their last six matches in all competitions.
Indeed, the bigger picture shows that Djurgarden have lost just once in their previous 11 matches in all competitions which came in the form of a 1-0 loss away from home at Kalmar but aside from that, Djurgardens have been very consistent.
Seven wins within these last 11 games will also serve as a welcome boost ahead of this two-legged Europa Conference League affair against Rijeka, along with the fact that Djurgarden have lost just three of their last 14 matches on their travels in all competitions.
This looks like being a tightly fought contest between two teams that look fairly well matched on paper and a low-scoring tussle could unfold at the Stadion HNK Rijeka as a result.
