Betis Expected to Beat Valencia and Win the Copa del Rey for the First time in 17 Years

Real Betis and Valencia are set to clash in the Copa del Rey final this Saturday with the two clubs in search of their silverware against the norm in Spain with two clubs outside of the top five meeting in the final for only the second time this decade.

For Betis, they haven't won anything other than the Segunda Division since they last won the Copa del Rey against the odds in 2004/05. That was just their second ever triumph in Spain's biggest cup competition, with them also getting the job done in 1976/77.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men have been defying the odds all season long, and with them still in with a chance of getting into the Champions League for next season, this campaign is set to be their best since way back when they last won the Copa del Rey in 2004/05 and finished fourth.

Ever since that triumph 17 years ago, the club have only reached the semi-finals once back in 2018/19, and found themselves settling for round of 32 exits most seasons.

Ironically, that 2018/19 run from Betis was also the year that Valencia last won the trophy, as they beat Los Verdiblancos 3-2 over two legs before edging past Barcelona in the final. Marcelino was the manager that day, and much of the team that played then have since moved on too.

In La Liga, however, it’s been a very underwhelming season for Valencia, and this is all they have left to salvage something from another campaign where they are likely to finish outside of the European spots - they haven't finished higher than ninth in the past three years.

Things have been very topsy-turvy for the club in 2022 as well, with them winning only two games in March, and continuing this form into April with a goalless draw at home to Cadiz, a 1-1 tie with Rayo Vallecano, and a 2-1 defeat to Osasuna.

Betis, despite losing track on the Champions League spots, have just continued to build on their progress under Pellegrini this campaign with them now boasting 17 wins in the league and a solid defensive record of 38 goals conceded in 33 games - this is fewer than the defensive brilliance of Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

The club have also knocked out the likes of Real Sociedad, Sevilla, and Vallecano along the way, but they do head into this one off the back of a defeat at home to Elche in midweek.

Forebet predicts a win in the final for Betis, and for the game to see under 2.5 goals.
