Nantes and Monaco set for stalemate in cup clash

There’s further action from the Coupe de France on Wednesday night as the second semi-final of the domestic cup competition features this upcoming tussle between Nantes and visitors, Monaco, in an all-Ligue 1 encounter at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

After a slow start to the campaign which saw Nantes pick up just five wins in their opening 16 matches of the domestic season, Wednesday night’s hosts have since rallied and produced some encouraging results in both Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France.

Nantes have lost just two of their subsequent 14 matches in all competitions which came in the form of defeats against Nice and Strasbourg, both of which were in Ligue 1 and both away from home.

However, 10 wins during this period suggest Nantes are no pushovers and the hosts stand a real chance of progressing through to the final of this cup competition.

Nantes are also unbeaten in their last eight matches on home soil, winning seven of the eight games with just one draw - a 0-0 stalemate with Wednesday’s visitors, Monaco, back in early January.

Monaco have now gone three league matches without a win in Ligue 1 as the visitors have drawn with both Lorient and Bordeaux which was followed by a 2-1 loss at home to Reims on the weekend.

The principality club had previously strung together a useful looking three-match winning streak which consisted of wins against Lens and Amiens in the previous rounds of the Coupe de France along with a 2-0 home win over Lyon in Ligue 1 in between.

With Monaco now sitting in 9th place on the Ligue 1 ladder and five points adrift of 5th placed Strasbourg, Monaco may well view this Coupe de France semi-final tie as the best opportunity for the visitors to achieve European participation next season.

But results away from home have yielded a mixed return for Monaco in recent times.

Monaco have picked up just four wins in their last 11 away games in all competitions while also losing three and being involved in four stalemates.

So although the visitors have won each of their last 10 away ties in the Coupe de France, there’s no guarantees against fellow Ligue 1 opposition, Nantes, in this second semi-final.

Therefore, Nantes and Monaco may see this tie going all the way after stalemate at the end of the regular 90 minutes.
