Marseille can hold their own at Nice
2205

Wednesday night’s Coupe de France clash between Nice and Marseille sees the two Ligue 1 teams go head-to-head at the Allianz Riviera for the right to progress through to the semi-finals of this season’s domestic cup competition.

This is also a clash between 2nd and 3rd placed teams in the French top flight and it’s conceivable that the winner of this encounter may just lift the trophy of this competition later in the season.

Nice saw their impressive seven-match winning streak in all competitions come to an end last time out in Ligue 1 when they were handed a disappointing and unexpected 1-0 defeat at home to lowly Clermont.

But the hosts have another chance to redeem themselves in this upcoming cup-tie against Marseille.

As part of this impressive winning streak, Nice had previously recorded wins in the earlier rounds of the Coupe de France over Cholet and a win on penalties against the mighty PSG after the scores were level at 0-0 at the end of normal time.

Marseille bounced back from their previous 2-1 defeat away at Lyon on the weekend when they registered a heavy 5-2 loss at home against Angers which the visitors will be hoping they can transfer into this cup-tie at the Allianz Riviera on Wednesday night.

Indeed, that loss on the road at Lyon has been Marseille’s only slip-up in recent times as the visitors have suffered just that one defeat in their last 11 matches overall in all competitions.

Eight wins during this sequence also thrusts Marseille into the mix for a possible Coupe de France trophy win and their progress into this quarter-final stage was thanks to wins in the earlier rounds against Cannet Rocheville, Chauvigny along with a penalty shoot-out win themselves over fellow Ligue 1 counterparts, Montpellier, as well.

Marseille have also made themselves a tough unit to beat on the road in all competitions too as the visitors have lost just three out of their last 19 matches in all competitions, keeping a total of nine clean sheets in the process.

In addition, Marseille have lost just once in their last nine meetings against Nice and so the visitors therefore look a decent prospect with the handicap in this cup-tie.
