Sunderland set for EFL Trophy win over Lincoln City

Lincoln City will be hoping to extend their 100% start to their EFL Trophy campaign when they welcome Sunderland to Sincil Bank on Tuesday.
The Imps have won each of their two games in the competition this season and sit three points clear at the top of Group F.
Sunderland, meanwhile, find themselves third – six points behind Lincoln – although they have yet to open their EFL Trophy account this term.
Lincoln head into Tuesday’s clash on the back of a 2-2 draw with Plymouth Argyle, with Anthony Scully rescuing a point with a 90th-minute penalty.
They now sit sixteenth in the League One table, having picked up three wins, five draws and five losses from their opening 11 games.
Although the Imps haven’t made a great start to their League One campaign, they have enjoyed playing in the EFL Trophy.
They have already beaten Manchester United U21 and Bradford City this term, scoring over 2.5 goals on both occasions.
On the flip side, Sunderland find themselves second in League One – two points behind first-place Wigan Athletic and ten points clear of Lincoln.
The Black Cats have only lost two of their ten league matches this season, registering seven wins and one draw in the process.
Having already netted 18 goals this term, only three teams in League One have scored more than Sunderland.
After crushing Cheltenham Town 5-0 last week, Sunderland were thrashed 4-0 by Portsmouth on Saturday.
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession and chalking up ten shots at Fratton Park, they were completely outplayed by the hosts.
Head-to-head: Remarkably, Lincoln and Sunderland have already faced each other on four occasions in 2021.
The two sides met in the play-offs last season, with Lincoln winning 2-0 at home and Sunderland the reverse leg 2-1.
Lincoln have only managed to win one of their previous six meetings with the Black Cats, recording one draw and four losses in that time.
Team news: Lincoln currently have three players sidelined through injury – Conor McGrandles, Tom Hopper and Chris Maguire.
Sunderland, meanwhile, will be without the injured duo of Arbenit Xhemajli and Jordan Willis on Tuesday.
Although Sunderland have yet to open their EFL Trophy account this season, they have made a far brighter start to the League One campaign than Lincoln.
For that reason, Forebet predicts that Sunderland will claim all three points on Tuesday – keeping a clean sheet in the process.
