Wolfsburg host Schalke in the round of 16 in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday night. A win will send one of these clubs into the DFB Pokal quarterfinals.

Schalke may be at the bottom of the Bundesliga table after 19 matches, but they have the chance to qualify for the quarterfinals of the cup. Wolfsburg are fighting for Champions League qualification and sit in third place in the league.

The Bundesliga is very competitive this season and it should extend to the DFB Pokal. Bayern Munich were eliminated from the competition in the previous round making the tournament wide open. Nine of the 16 teams remaining are Bundesliga sides.

Wolfsburg are on a five-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Three straight games ended in wins for the Wolves as they won to nil in each of those games.

Oliver Glasner’s team have played 24 times in all competitions posting a 13W-8D-3L record. The Wolves have tallied 45 goals for an average of 1.88 per game. Meanwhile, their stingy defence have conceded 22 times for an average of just 0.92 per fixture.

Schalke are winless in four straight matches. They have posted a mere 3W-5D-13L record in 21 games in all competitions this season. The Blues have scored 22 times for an average of 1.05 per fixture. Meanwhile, they have given up a ridiculous 51 goals for an average of 2.43 per match.

Wolfsburg are unbeaten in three straight games against Schalke with two of those finishing in wins. Earlier this season, the Wolves went to Schalke and won 2-0 thanks to goals from Wout Weghorst and Xavier Schlager in the first half.

Schalke have a long list of injuries heading into the cup match. Frederik Ronnow, Steve Skrzybski, Kilian Ludewig, Salif Sane, Nabil Bentaleb, Vedad Ibisevic, and Goncalo Pacienca are all doubts or ruled out for the match.

Glasner has no injuries listed heading into the game on Wednesday night. Based on having a fully fit squad and their recent record versus Schalke, Wolfsburg should gain a win and progress to the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal.

Wolfsburg are playing brilliantly in all competitions and have the chance to qualify for the Champions League as well. Striker Weghorst has 13 goals in 19 Bundesliga games and two in two DFB Pokal matches this term. He could get on the scoresheet this week.

The Wolves should power past Schalke and onto the quarterfinals. It could be a dream season at the VW Arena for the Green and White.
