Celta Vigo and Valencia may be heading for stalemate

The Abanca-Balaídos is the venue for this upcoming clash between Celta Vigo and Valencia in Friday night’s edition of La Liga as the second round of matches in this new season is upon us this weekend.

Celta Vigo, perhaps unsurprisingly, drew their season-opener way from home at Eibar in a 0-0 draw which became the host’s fifth stalemate in their last eight matches overall in the Spanish top flight, but they’ll be hoping to go one step better when they entertain Valencia at their Abanca-Balaídos on Saturday.

That draw at Eibar also meant that Celta Vigo have now gone eight league matches without a win in La Liga but results at home have been stubborn to say the least in recent times.

The hosts have lost just two out of their last 12 matches and along with wins over Sevilla, Leganes and Deportivo Alaves, there have also been no fewer than seven draws within this period too.

Looking at the head-to-head results in recent times, and Valencia have won three of the last six meetings but Celta Vigo have lost just one of their last five at home against their visitors.

Valencia narrowly missed out on a top seven finish in last season’s La Liga campaign which was thanks to losses away from home towards the end of the season at Leganes and Sevilla, and although they recorded wins on home turf at their Estadio de Mestalla over Real Valladolid, Espanyol and Levante, the losses proved to be decisive.

Indeed, Valencia’s 9th place finish in the Spanish top flight flattered the visitors somewhat as results and form at home spared their blushes with just one defeat in their own backyard throughout the whole of the campaign which glossed over their troubles on the road.

The visitors managed to pick up just three away wins all season last term and ended the season in dismal fashion on their travels as they failed to win any of their final 11 matches, which included no fewer than eight defeats.

Valencia’s season-opener this term saw them register a 4-2 home win against Levante so they’ll head into this upcoming clash against Celta Vigo in better spirits, but they may not have it all their own way in Saturday’s clash, with a draw looking a distinct possibility.
