Bayer Leverkusen eyeing victory with trip to Freiburg

Bundesliga games are coming thick and fast at the moment. The previous round of fixtures only finished on Wednesday, but SC Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen will kick off Matchday 29 at the Schwarzwald-Stadion on Friday night.

Freiburg are without a win since the season resumed. After drawing with RB Leipzig, Christian Streich’s side suffered a disappointing defeat to relegation strugglers Werder Bremen.

In their previous game, Freiburg blew a two-goal lead to eventually draw with Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite scoring three goals from just four shots on target, Freiburg conceded two late goals and had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

This series of poor results has seen Streich’s men drop to 8th – one point ahead of Schalke 04 and one point behind TSG Hoffenheim.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen are 5th – level with fourth-place Borussia Monchengladbach on 53 points. Still the gap between them and sixth-place Wolfsburg remains a whopping 11 points.

Leverkusen returned to action with two high-scoring victories, first over Werder (4-1) and then against Gladbach (3-1). However, Peter Bosz’s side were on the other end of a hammering last time out.

Bayer were thrashed 4-1 by Wolfsburg on Tuesday and could only manage one shot on target. Julian Baumgartlinger’s late consolation strike did very little to brighten the scoreline for the hosts.

Having said that, Leverkusen will be boosted by their recent head-to-head record with Freiburg. Leverkusen have only suffered one defeat in their previous nine league meetings with Freiburg.

Furthermore, Freiburg’s woeful run has seen them win just one of their previous seven Bundesliga games, while Bayer have won by at least two goals in half of their last 16 away games in the league.

The team news suggests that Freiburg have no fresh injury concerns. Meanwhile, Leverkusen remain without striker Kevin Volland, so Kai Havertz is likely to lead the line once again.

It goes without saying that Leverkusen had an uncharacteristic bad day at the office last time out. But it’s difficult to imagine Bosz’s side putting in another poor performance, especially considering their outstanding record in 2020.

Freiburg will be desperate to get some points on the board. But having suffered three home defeats in their previous six by over 1.5 goals, Leverkusen come into this game as favourites.

Forebet predicts that Freiburg will get on the scoresheet, but Leverkusen are likely to return to winning ways by scoring over 2.5 goals.
