Can Werder Bremen win back to back Bundesliga matches?

Werder Bremen are coming off of a hard-fought 1-0 win against Freiburg away from home on matchday 27. The club are still chasing safety and sit six points behind 15th-placed Mainz heading into the midweek round of games.

Borussia Monchengladbach head to the Weser Stadium having lost to Bayer Leverkusen in a heartbreaking fixture over the weekend. Gladbach fell 3-1 to the visitors and now sit eight points behind Bayern Munich.

If Marco Rose’s team can defeat Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund can take points off of Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, then the gap could be narrowed to as few as five points. The Foals still have an outside chance of winning the title, but it is slipping away.

Borussia Monchengladbach are unbeaten in nine straight games versus Werder Bremen in all competitions. Six of those nine fixtures ended in wins for the Foals. In addition, six of those nine games saw both teams find the back of the net.

Their previous match this season saw Borussia Monchengladbach win 3-1. Ramy Bensebaini opened the scoring for the Foals before Patrick Hermann scored either side of halftime. Werder Bremen’s goal was a consolation strike scored in the 90th minute by Leonardo Bittencourt.

It was Bittencourt that scored Werder Bremen’s goal against Freiburg on Saturday. The win did look in doubt at the weekend but a late strike by the home team was chalked off due to a player being in an offside position. Werder Bremen were saved by VAR.

Werder Bremen will be without veteran midfielder Philipp Bargfrede after he was sent off due to a second bookable offense against Freiburg. Centre-back Omer Toprak missed the fixture due to a calf strain while midfielder Nuri Sahin wasn’t selected for the squad.

Rose is likely to still be without Denis Zakaria due to a knee injury. Fabian Johnson is also suffering from an injury. He has missed Gladbach’s last two games due to a thigh strain and will miss out once more.

Five of the last nine games between the two Bundesliga rivals saw over 2.5 goals scored with Borussia Monchengladbach dominating the series. The Foals must win to have any chance of catching Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, Werder Bremen need a victory to gain ground in the race for top-flight survival. Gladbach have won three straight away games and could make it a fourth win on the road from four in midweek.
