Can Borussia Monchengladbach continue title 1970s revival?
4429

Borussia Monchengladbach were Germany’s team of the 1970s, but by the end mid-1980s, Bayern Munich had usurped them to become the premier club in the country.

Marco Rose has led a revolution at Borussia Park and shades of the 1970s have returned to Monchengladbach. The Foals are atop the Bundesliga with four points separating them from Bayern Munich.

However, just one point stands between Borussia Monchengladbach and second-place RB Leipzig. A shift in power is occurring in the Bundesliga and Saturday’s fixture between Borussia and Bayern could solidify the strength of the Foals.

Matches between these teams in recent seasons have been back and forth. Bayern Munich have won just six of their last 15 matches against Borussia Monchengladbach in all competitions. Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach have won four times during that 15-match series.

Five their last 15 matches ended in draws in all competitions. Last season’s meetings between Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich saw the latter win at Borussia Park, 5-1. The Foals were able to pick up all three points at the Allianz Arena, however, thanks to a 3-0 win.

Borussia Monchengladbach have won five of their last six matches in all competitions and go into the match with boatloads of confidence. Rose could once again deploy a 4-3-3 formation, which was the same tactic he used to wide-spread success at Red Bull Salzburg.

Rose has altered his tactics when needed but with differing results occurring. He played 4-2-3-1 against RB Leipzig and got stuffed 3-1. A 3-5-2 formation was used against Bayer Leverkusen as the Foals won 2-1.

Bayern Munich interim manager Hans Flick has seen results improve but Bayern Munich are coming off of a loss to Bayer Leverkusen. This isn’t the Bayern Munich team we are used to seeing with transfer moves in recent markets not coming off.

Robert Lewandowski leads Bayern Munich in goals with 16 of the team’s 34 strikes. He has bagged 47% of Bayern Munich’s goals and without the Polish hitman, the team would be further down the table.

Marcus Thuram is having a career season with six goals already for Borussia Monchengladbach in the league. Patrick Hermann and a re-born Breel Embolo have added five apiece.

These teams should put goals in the back of the net. Twelve of Borussia Monchengladbach’s 20 matches have seen both teams score goals. Twelve matches have also seen over 2.5 goals tallied.

Bayern Munich have seen 13 of their 20 matches in all competitions finish with both teams scoring while 18 of those games ended with over 2.5 goals scored.

Saturday’s game should once again see over 2.5 goals scored and both sides find the back of the net. Borussia Monchengladbach will continue their great run toward the title with a win over their rival Bayern Munich to stay in first place.
