Champions League on The Line at Leverkusen

Champions League on The Line at Leverkusen
2193

With just three weeks remaining in the German Bundesliga season we have an exciting race to see who will finish inside the top four places.

Champions League qualification for next season is on the line and Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt meet on Sunday in a bid to help their claim for fourth place.

Bayer Leverkusen start the game in sixth place on 51 points with Eintracht Frankfurt currently in fourth place with 54 points. This game could not have come at a better time and it has plenty riding on it for both teams.

The hosts come into the match in good form having won each of their last three games in the Bundesliga. They have defeated Stuttgart and Augsburg away plus Nurnberg at home.  It is a welcome return to form for Bayer Leverkusen who suffered three straight defeats in March and early April.

Trends show Bayer Leverkusen have won seven of their last ten home Bundesliga matches but have lost two of the last three. They have been scoring plenty of goals and Bayer Leverkusen have netted 2 or more goals in six of their last eight home league games.

In fact, Bayer Leverkusen have scored 2 or more goals in ten of their last thirteen Bundesliga matches.

Eintracht Frankfurt played in the Europa League semi-final on Thursday night and were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Chelsea. It was not a disastrous result and gives them some hope for the second leg but a win would have been much better.

That result means it is now just one win in their last six matches for Eintracht Frankfurt and that came in the home leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Benfica, which they won 2-0.  Since that victory, Eintracht Frankfurt have had three draws, two of which have come in the Bundesliga.

They have been held by Wolfsburg away and Hertha Berlin at home, with both games seeing under 2.5 goals.

Trends show Eintracht Frankfurt have been tough to beat on the road and they are undefeated in their last seven away Bundesliga matches. However, only three of those seven games have ended with a win and this will be their biggest away test since February when they picked up a point at RB Leipzig.

Team news and Bayer Leverkusen are without the injured duo of Joel Pohjanpalo and Karim Bellarabi who are out for the season. They also have doubts over the fitness of Isaac Kiese Thelin, Panagiotis Takis Retsos and Leon Bailey.

Eintracht Frankfurt will look to freshen things up a little from Thursday night but still have doubts over Sebastien Haller and Martin Hinteregger.  Taleb Tawatha is out for the rest of the season.

This game is good timing for Bayer Leverkusen considering their form and the fact the opposition have a Europa League semi-final to contend with right now. The hosts will be hoping to use that to their advantage and could come out on top to move level on points in the race for fourth place.
