Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis to clash in La Liga top-six showdown

Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis are battling to finish in La Liga’s top six and qualify for next season’s Europa League. Betis are sixth in the standings and two points ahead of Athletic in the race for Europa League qualification.

On Thursday night, the La Liga top-six rivals will clash with three massive points up for grabs. A win for Athletic Bilbao would allow them to move ahead of Betis in the table. A loss would see Real Betis increase their lead over Athletic Club.

Athletic Bilbao are on a great run of form against Real Betis at San Mames Stadium. The Lions won each of their last nine home matches against Betis.

In the reverse fixture, the teams drew nil-nil, as Athletic Club outshot Betis 10-9. Betis kept over 53% of the ball but couldn’t find a way through the Athletic defence to score a goal.

Real Betis have hit a poor patch of form in La Liga. Los Verdiblancos took a mere four points from the last 18 points on offer. Four of their last six matches ended in defeat. Betis lost 4-0 to Barcelona last time out and go to San Mames winless in four straight fixtures.

Athletic Club are thriving compared to Betis right now. The Lions took 11 points from their last 18 points available. The Athletic defence conceded just four goals across the last six matches. The team doesn’t score many goals, managing just seven in the last six fixtures.

The Lions allowed just 32 goals in 32 matches this season. It is the fifth-fewest goals figure in La Liga. Athletic scored 43 goals. Betis conceded 37 times in their 32 matches while scoring 39 times.

Coach Ernesto Valverde has four players in the San Mames treatment room. Defenders Ander Capa and Inigo Martinez are both ruled out with injuries. Forward Iker Muniain has a muscle injury and will miss the match. Forward Jon Morcillo is a doubt following a shoulder injury.

Manuel Pellegrini won’t have Edgar Gonzalez available to play due to a suspension. Defender Luiz Felipe, midfielder Joaquin, and midfielder Nabil Fekir are all ruled out with long-term injuries.

Forward Borja Iglesias has a muscle injury and is likely to miss the match. Victor Torre and Youssouf Sabaly are both unlikely to play due to injuries.

Athletic Bilbao are on a nine-match win streak against Real Betis at San Mames. With Betis in awful form, Athletic should pick up a 2-1 win and move into the top six.
