Bundesliga 2 side Jahn Regensburg host Bundesliga club Koln in the first round of the DFB Pokal. Last season, Koln reached the round of 16 of the DFB Pokal before being dumped out. Jahn Regensburg made it to the second round of the competition.

Both clubs will fancy their chances of progressing to the next round, but Koln are the team bookies favour for the win in the DFB Pokal first round.

Jahn Regensburg have already played twice in the Bundesliga 2 this season posting back-to-back wins. Coach Mersad Selimbegovic’s team has not conceded a goal in the Bundesliga 2. Jahn Regensburg won 2-0 against Darmstadt and 3-0 against Arminia Bielefeld.

Based on Jahn Regensburg’s form to start the season, the squad should fancy their chances against a Koln side that won’t start the Bundesliga campaign until the first weekend of August.

Coach Steffen Baumgart led Koln to a seventh-place Bundesliga finish last term. The Billy Goats’ finish to the Bundesliga season in 2021-22 led them to Europa Conference League qualification for this season.

Koln won’t play their first match in the Europa Conference League until August. The Billy Goats are coming off of a strong preseason with recent wins against Kickers Offenbach and NEC. Koln’s only loss in preseason came against AC Milan.

Baumgart lost one of his key players from last term this summer as Salih Ozcan joined Borussia Dortmund for €5 million. Koln signed Kristian Pedersen from Birmingham City and Eric Martel from RB Leipzig.

Defender Lucas Kilian joined from Mainz for €2m. Koln also signed Steffen Tigges from Dortmund for €1.5m and Sargis Adamyan from Hoffenheim for €1.5m. The Billy Goats are no weaker going into this season than they were at the end of last term.

Jahn Regensburg coach Selimbegovic has used a 4-4-2 formation this season in the Bundesliga 2. Five different goal scorers have found the back of the net for the home side.

Goal creation has come from the right side in the Bundesliga 2 for Jahn Regensburg. Right-back Benedikt Saller and right-sided midfielder Nicklas Shipnoski have combined for four assists. Jahn Regensburg have scored five times in the Bundesliga 2.

Sarpreet Singh and Oscar Schonfelder are both likely to miss the cup match due to injury for Jahn Regensburg. Koln’s Florian Dietz and Dimitrios Limnios are both unlikely to play for Koln.

The Billy Goats may be behind Jahn Regensburg heading into the first round of the DFB Pokal, but the Bundesliga club should push on for a win. Both teams should score with over 3.5 goals as Koln post a 3-1 win.
