Three months on from Liverpool’s penalty shootout triumph over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, the teams return to Wembley for the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Chelsea have featured in four of the past five FA Cup finals, winning one (2018) and losing three (2017, 2020, 2021). Can they make amends for last year’s defeat to Leicester City?

As for Liverpool, they haven’t reached the FA Cup final since 2012, with their most recent triumph coming back in 2006. Will they keep the quadruple alive this weekend?

It is worth noting that the two sides are separated by 16 points in the Premier League table, with second-place Liverpool leading third-place Chelsea.

The Blues claimed an easy 3-0 victory over Leeds United on Wednesday, racking up 68% possession and 17 shots. Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku grabbed the goals.

As a result, Chelsea have lost just two of their previous nine games across all competitions – picking up five wins and two draws along the way.

In the FA Cup, Thomas Tuchel’s side saw off Chesterfield (5-1), Plymouth Argyle (2-1) and Luton Town (3-2) in the early rounds before beating Middlesbrough (2-0) in the quarter-finals.

In the previous round, the Blues punched their ticket to the showpiece with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace – thanks to goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheeks and Mason Mount.

On the flip side, Liverpool head into the final on the back of a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Aston Villa – extending their unbeaten streak to 15 games in all competitions.

It is also worth noting that Jurgen Klopp’s men have won seven of their previous eight encounters across all competitions.

The Reds kicked off their FA Cup campaign with an easy win over Shrewsbury Town (4-1) before dispatching Cardiff City (3-1) and Norwich City (2-1).

After edging past a spirited Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the quarter-finals, Liverpool booked their place in the final with a 3-2 win against Manchester City.

Head-to-head: As we already know, Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties in the EFL Cup final after 120 minutes of goalless action.

The Reds are currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten streak against the Blues following back-to-back draws between the teams in the Premier League.

When you look at the bigger picture, Chelsea have only managed to win two of their previous 11 matches against Liverpool in all competitions.

Team news: Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell remain absent for Chelsea, while Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are both injury doubts.

Meanwhile, Liverpool look set to be without key midfielder Fabinho after the Brazilian hobble off the field against Aston Villa on Tuesday.

This is destined to be a close-fought battle between two high-quality teams, so we should see plenty of action at both ends of the pitch.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Chelsea and Liverpool will play out a high-scoring draw – forcing the game into extra-time.
