Manchester City to roll past Swindon Town in FA Cup third round

Swindon Town host Manchester City at the County Ground on Friday night in the FA Cup third round. The draw was cruel, yet exciting for the Robins as the chance to play Manchester City allows them to compete against the best team in England.

Manchester City are running away with the Premier League title and manager Pep Guardiola will hope to bring the FA Cup back to the Etihad Stadium, too. A win over Swindon Town isn’t just wanted by the manager, but expected.

The Cityzens go into the fixture at the County Ground on the back of a six-match winning streak. Guardiola’s team came from behind on New Year’s Day to defeat Arsenal with nearly the last kick of the game.

Now, Manchester City can focus on the task of winning in the FA Cup third round against an opponent they should play off the park. Guardiola could rotate the team for the match allowing key stars to rest.

Swindon Town manager Ben Garner will see Friday’s FA Cup third round as a chance to play an elite team. The Robins are in the mix for the promotion playoffs in the League Two. They are undefeated in their last two games heading into Friday night.

Despite a decent home record of 5W-5D-4L with 19 goals for and 16 against, Swindon Town have not played a team of Manchester City’s strength this term.

Manchester City have an away record of 10W-2D-3L. The Cityzens have scored 28 goals and conceded 12 goals to opponents in all competitions.

Guardiola could be without Phil Foden and Oleksandr Zinchenko for the match due to both players testing positive for COVID-19. John Stones is a doubt due to a knock. Liam Delap is ruled out with an ankle injury. Riyah Mahrez is at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The manager is expected to rest Ederson in favour of Zack Steffen in goal. A host of youth team graduates could make the squad as well with Cole Palmer potentiall starting.

Swindon Town manager Garner will be without goalkeeper Joe Wollacott after being call-up to the Ghana national team for the Africa Cup of Nations. Lewis Ward should get the start in goal.

Centre-back Mathieu Baudry is ruled out with a hip tendon injury. Jack Payne is also likely to miss due to an injury.

Swindon Town are taking a massive step up in competition versus Manchester City. The Cityzens should rotate the side but come through this game with ease. Manchester City are likely to win to nil and not concede a goal to opponents with over 2.5 goals being scored.
