The 192nd edition of the Manchester derby takes place this Sunday, and off the back of a five-goal haul for Erling Haaland and Manchester United’s loss to Fulham at Old Trafford, things could get nasty for the Red Devils.
Let’s look at the biggest wins for either United or Manchester City in this famous battle.
Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City (2011)
A lot of fans will remember the days before City's billionaire ownership that saw United win the derby more often than not. However, practically all of the high-scoring wins come in the favour of City. The most famous of these victories is undoubtedly the 6-1 win over at Old Trafford in 2011/12.
It remains both City’s biggest win margin at Old Trafford and the most convincing win in Manchester derby history. This famous game was also the changing of the guard in the city and in the Premier League, as City would go on to win the title for the first time in 44 years that campaign.
Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City (1926)
City have destroyed United 6-1 on another occasion over on their neighbour’s patch.
Charlie Rennox gave Manchester United a 1-0 lead, as it looked as if the home side would stroll to a win. However, braces from Frank Roberts and Billy Austin and a goal each from Tommy Johnson and George Hicks handed City their biggest-ever win in this derby until it was matched in 2011.
Manchester United 5-0 Manchester City (1994)
United’s biggest win in this derby is also by a five-goal margin, but compared to City’s inability to keep a clean sheet, Peter Schmeichel and his defence did so that day.
Andrei Kanchelskis also became the first and only man to get a hat-trick in the Premier League against the Citizens in a Manchester derby, as Mark Hughes and Eric Cantona also hit the back of the net.
Manchester United 5-1 Manchester City (1960)
You have to go all the way back to 1960 to see the last time before 1994 where United won by netting five goals, as they did so in a First Division showdown at Old Trafford.
Alex Dawson also became just one of four players in Manchester derby history to get a hat-trick against their neighbours in 1960, and his three goals were almost matched by two from United's second all-time top scorer, Bobby Charlton.
Neither one of these Manchester sides had a great season back then, however, as United finished seventh with City down in 13th.
