The Sides Creating Upsets Across Europe This Season

We’re fully into the 2023/24 season across Europe and we are already seeing a few sides spring some upsets.

Let’s take a look at who are upsetting the odds these days and what this could mean for their season.

Girona

This Spanish side are no doubt causing the biggest upset across La Liga this season, as Girona sit in third and only two points behind Real Madrid and one behind Barcelona.

In fact, they are already seven clear of seventh-placed Real Betis, so a spot in Europe for next season is well on the cards if they carry on.

This is also just Girona’s second season back in La Liga, having jumped between the top flight and second tier across the past decade. They have also netted a record of 18 goals in just eight games, including two in a 2-1 win away to Sevilla.

Sassuolo

Sassuolo are not causing an upset in the league, per se, but similarly to last season, they are shocking Serie A with certain results.

The Black and Green have become the only team to beat last season’s Champions League finalists and favourites for the title, Inter Milan, beating them 1-0 at the San Siro. This also came one week on from beating Juventus 4-2.

Tottenham

Although not causing upsets in the grand scheme of things because of their club stature, Tottenham Hotspur are undoubtedly turning a few heads after an unbeaten start to life in the Premier League under Ange Postecoglou.

In a season where they lost their star man, Harry Kane, Spurs have gone on to defeat the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United and also draw 2-2 away to rivals Arsenal.

Without question, this sees them in a race for the top four, and should this form continue, perhaps a title race too.

Brest

The biggest upset in Ligue 1 right now is the form of the champions, Paris Saint-Germain. The serial winners of Ligue 1 have secured only three wins from the first seven games and head into this match down in fifth.

But, the team taking the headlines right now is Brest. Currently, the side are sitting second in the table and only a adrift of first-placed Monaco because of goals difference.

The club have managed to lose to only Marseille, beating last season's runners-up Lens and also securing wins over Le Havre, Reims and Lyon.

To put into perspective the excellent form of Brest in Ligue 1, the club finished only nine points and three positions above relegation last season.
