Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona would be massively complicated

A massive story broke yesterday about Barcelona star Lionel Messi telling the Catalan club that he wishes to leave this summer. The request comes as a major surprise, although there have been murmurings of discontent from the veteran star this season.

Reportedly, Messi is hoping to leave as a free agent, which seems ludicrous considering that he is still one of the best players in the world. However, the 33-year-old had a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave as a free agent. That clause expired on June 10th, though.

The forward's lawyers are believed to be arguing that the clause would run until the end of the season, but as the season has been extended there are extenuating circumstances, so should still be valid.

Barcelona’s hierarchy are certainly not going to allow Messi to go easily considering his status, not just within the club, but in football too.

But, it seems it may be hard to persuade the forward to stay. Not only has this season been an awful one for the Blaugrana, Messi reportedly clashed with new Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman in their first meeting.

Reports suggest Koeman’s plans to get rid of the likes of Luis Suarez and Arturo Vidal this summer went down like a lead balloon with the club's star player.

Barcelona fans are understandably devastated at the thought that the club legend has expressed his desire to leave. They will be hoping that their hero will still be with the Catalan club next season.

It will not be easy for Messi to leave, even if the likes of Manchester City and PSG have the financial clout to make a deal a reality. This is a story that could drag on for much of the transfer window, as nobody on either side is likely to compromise much.
