Champions League adventure only adding to Nagelsmann’s allure

Champions League adventure only adding to Nagelsmann’s allure
2325

On Thursday night, RB Leipzig recorded a late 2-1 victory over Champions League veteran’s Atletico Madrid to progress to the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in their history. In reality, Die Roten Bullen’s history only spans 11 years.

Although many people and coaches have had a hand in the German club's meteoric rise, current head coach Julian Nagelsmann has taken the team far beyond their expectations this season.

Not only did they mount a title challenge in the Bundesliga, albeit falling off a bit towards the end of the campaign, but the team from Leipzig are also mixing it with the big names of the European game in the latter stages of Europe’s elite competition.

The team's success has only added to the allure that Nagelsmann has as one of world football’s brightest young head coaches. At 33 years of age, he could still be playing the game if it were not for a career-ending injury in 2008.

The injury proved a blessing in disguise, as that is when then Augsburg coach Thomas Tuchel gave him a job as a scout. He then made the progression into coaching and the rest is history. In his late twenties, he was overachieving with minnows Hoffenheim, before arriving in RB Leipzig last summer.

The move was a natural progression to a highly ambitious club, who wants to become a force in the German game.

However, they will struggle to ever overthrow the Bavarian giants Bayern Munich in their homeland, even if they do manage to make it to the Champions League final.

It seems that Nagelsmann is heading for even bigger things than coaching Leipzig. The youngest coach to ever make the semi-finals of the Champions League has already been mooted as the next Bayern Munich head coach, while also being linked with Real Madrid.

If Nagelsmann continues to impress in Leipzig it will not be long until he has one of the biggest jobs in the European game.
