Peru and Colombia are on the outside looking in following four matchdays in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.Peru have taken a mere one point from 12 possible while Colombia have four points from their opening 12.

On Friday (European time), Colombia will visit Peru seeking a first World Cup qualifying win since matchday 1.

The Colombians have struggled in the tournament in defence conceding 11 times in four games. Embarrassingly, they conceded six goals to Ecuador in their most recent qualifier.

Colombia’s game versus Peru will be their first of 2021. Originally, the Colombians were scheduled to play Brazil and Paraguay in qualifying, but those games have been postponed.

Manager Reinaldo Rueda will be without Everton midfielder James Rodriguez. The midfielder has been ruled out of the World Cup qualifiers and Copa America due to a calf injury.

Juan Fernando Quintero is also out of the team following a positive COVID test. Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is also ruled out of the match due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Reuda still has a strong squad with the likes of goalie David Ospina, strikers Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata, and defender Yerry Mina.

However, with the team already conceding 11 times in four World Cup qualifiers, questions will be asked around the strength of the team’s spine.

Peru started the World Cup qualifying process with a 2-2 draw away to Paraguay. From there, Peru faced three of the most difficult sides in CONMEBOL, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. All three of those matches ended in losses.

Manager Ricardo Gareca’s team reached the 2018 World Cup, but as it stands, they will struggle to get many more points.

In CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying, the top four finishers qualify for the World Cup while the fifth-place team goes into the inter-continental playoff.

Peruvian striker Edison Flores will miss the World Cup qualifiers due to injury. Striker Paolo Guerrero was called up once more at the age of 37. He will be counted on to score the team’s goals.

Colombia are just two points off of fifth-place Uruguay. They could make up the distance with Uruguay in this week’s World Cup qualifiers and set themselves up for a strong finish to qualifying.

With both teams struggling in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying, it is likely that this game will finish with neither side getting the upper hand.

Peru and Colombia are likely to finish in a stalemate with both sides scoring and under 2.5 goals tallied.
