Two strugglers in the Australian A-League will go head-to-head on Friday evening at AAMI Park when Western United take on Melbourne Victory with a precious three points at stake for both sides.

Western United find themselves sitting third from bottom in the A-League standings in 10th place and also eight points adrift of the top six play-off pack but all three points against their struggling Victorian counterparts would see the deficit reduced to just five points.

Overall, it’s been a campaign of two sides for Western United as they’ve held their own at home but have struggled on the road in what has been an inconsistent season, not least in recent times as Western United have lost their last five matches on the trot.

It should be noted that four of these five defeats were incurred away from home, while on home soil, Western United have lost just once in their last six games amidst an encouraging home record of  W6 D3 L2  16 goals for, 9 against, and includes five clean sheets.

Melbourne Victory also slumped to their fifth league defeat on the trot in the A-League last time out as they narrowly lost 1-0 at home to Adelaide United.

However, it looks like the visitors will find themselves down near the foot of the table yet again at the end of this campaign.

In fact, Melbourne Victory have lost six of their last seven matches overall, picking up just one point from the possible 21 on offer and having managed to collect just two wins out of their last 16 matches, Victory look far from living up to their name on Friday evening as well.

The story doesn’t get any better when looking at Melbourne Victory’s results on the road either as they’ve lost their last five matches on the trot which includes a heavy 7-0 thrashing at the hands of local rivals, Melbourne City, and conceding a total of 15 goals and scoring just 2 in reply in these recent losses.

Having registered just three wins out of their last 24 matches on their travels, the odds certainly look to be against Melbourne Victory here, especially as they’ve also failed to beat Western United in each of the previous five meetings.
