Wolfsburg to finish in style against Mainz
3247

Saturday afternoon brings us the final fixtures of the season in the German top flight and features the clash between 4th placed Wolfsburg and 13th placed Mainz at the VOLKSWAGEN ARENA with the hosts looking to finish a successful campaign off in style.

Wolfsburg are already assured a top four finish in the Bundesliga as they hold an unassailable four-point lead over 5th placed Eintracht Frankfurt heading into the final day of the season, and along with it, the guarantee of Champions League football next season.

Wolfsburg have only recently suffered their first defeats at home in this season’s Bundesliga campaign which came in the form of losses to Bayern Munich 3-2 and Borussia Dortmund 2-0.

However, they quickly bounced back with a 3-0 home win over Union Berlin and a point in a 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig.

Form on home soil this season though has been generally very solid as Wolfsburg have won 10, drawn 4 and lost just 2 of their 16 matches to date at their Volkswagen Arena along with winning their previous four meetings on the trot against Mainz as well.

Onto Mainz and the visitors dropped down to 13th place in the Bundesliga following a heavy 3-1 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund but a previous nine-match unbeaten run in the German top flight just about saved Mainz’s bacon as they hold an important five-point cushion over third from bottom outfit, Werder Bremen.

Recent victories over Freiburg, Hoffenheim, Koln, Werder Bremen and most impressive of all, a 2-1 home win over Bayern Munich, have helped Mainz ensure they feature in next season’s Bundesliga campaign, while results away from home have also seen a marked improvement as well.

Mainz bring a solid seven-match unbeaten run into this final day of the Bundesliga season against Wolfsburg and the visitors may feel that they finally stand a chance of breaking the recent hold that Wolfsburg have had over them this Saturday.

However, out of the away matches played at teams sitting in the top four of the Bundesliga to date this season, Mainz have picked up just one point out of a possible nine on offer following losses at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich while drawing 1-1 at Dortmund, so they could have their work cut out at Wolfsburg this Saturday.
