VFL Bochum are on the cusp of a return to the Bundesliga after a decade away from the German top-flight. Their mission is simple.

All they have to do is pick up a draw at home to Sandhausen on Sunday afternoon to make that long-awaited return to the Bundesliga.

Bochum are currently leading Bundesliga.2 and are three points clear of third-place Greuther Furth, who occupy the promotion play-off spot.

Thomas Reis’ team missed a big opportunity last time out to seal their spot in the German top-flight when they drew 1-1 at Nurnberg.

The draw was part of an inconsistent recent run of league form that has seen the home team pick up just three wins from their last six Bundesliga.2 games.

VfL Bochum have been strong on home soil of late in the German second tier, as they have won ten of their last 12 league games at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion.

The main factor in those good home results has been their lethal attacking displays at home, as they have scored at least two goals in all ten of those recent home victories.

This is not just a big game for the home team, as SV Sandhausen could well slip into the relegation play-off spot if they fail to pick up anything from this clash.

The visitors are currently just a point above 16th place Osnabruck. They are also just three points above the automatic relegation spots, although they have a vastly superior goal difference to 17th place Eintracht Braunschweig.

Things could have been a lot worse for Sandhausen if were not for a 2-0 win over Jahn Regensburg last time out. The victory ended a three-game losing run that threatened to suck them into the drop zone.
