Monaco to keep up pressure with win over Rennes

3rd placed Monaco breezed past lower-league Rumilly Vallieres in their midweek Coupe de France semi-final, recording a resounding 5-1 victory over their hosts to progress through to the final where they’ll meet PSG, but this Sunday sees Monaco return to the business of vying for a top two finish over the aforementioned PSG.

Monaco had previously suffered a 3-2 loss at home to Lyon in Ligue 1 but the principality club immediately bounced back with a 1-0 win away at Reims last weekend to leave them just two points adrift of 2nd placed PSG.

Monaco return to their Stade Louis II ground for this upcoming clash against Rennes on the back of six wins out of their last seven matches in the French top flight, while form at home has also been steady.

Just one defeat out of their last 10 games has given the hosts a decent chance of a possible top two finish in Ligue 1 and a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Monaco will be without midfielders Diatta and Diop along with forwards Geubbels, Jovetic and Pellegri.

Stade Rennais continue to look poised to strike into the top five without having actually managed it yet following a 1-0 defeat away at Bordeaux and a creditable point in a 1-1 draw at home with PSG, the visitors still remain a point behind the current 5th placed incumbents, Marseille.

Following a worrying five-match losing streak which threatened to end any hopes of a possible top five finish for Rennes, the visitors had subsequently responded in positive fashion by putting together a solid six-match unbeaten run in Ligue 1 which consisted of five wins.

Victories over Strasbourg, Metz, Nantes, Angers and Dijon saw Rennes take advantage of lesser competition but the pressure is perhaps now starting to tell as Rennes have failed to make the breakthrough and face a quality outfit in the shape of Monaco this Sunday.

In addition, Rennes have been inconsistent away from home in recent weeks, winning just two of their last eight matches on their travels and losing four of these games as well with defeats incurred at Montpellier, Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux.

Rennes will be without defender Truffert and midfielder Martin for this trip to Monaco.

Monaco are still firmly in the race for a Champions League spot and will be brimming with confidence here.
