Louis van Gaal will survive trip to Shrewsbury

Manchester United faces a tricky trip to Shrewsbury in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night. According to reports United boss Louis van Gaal looks set to leave the Red Devils at the end of the season with Jose Mourinho heavily touted as the Dutchman’s replacement.

A defeat at the League One Shrews could however mean that the former Ajax and Barcelona boss could be out the Old Trafford exit door quicker than the summer. United are injury-stricken at the moment, as key players Wayne Rooney and David de Gea have both recently picked-up injuries to add to the Red Devils long list of defensive absentees.

This game is hard to predict for those in the football predictions business. The Shrews are struggling in the third tier fighting relegation to League Two, so their form is not great, but that usually means absolutely nothing in the FA Cup.

Teams can lift their game and may see the competition as break from the slog that is their poor league campaign. The Shrews have a history of causing shocks in this competition and are unlikely to allow United all their own way.

Mickey Mellon’s team may even force a replay, but United should have enough quality and know-how to see off their lower league opposition.

If they do not then Louis van Gaal’s position as the Red Devils boss will be untenable and the Dutchman will have to heading for the Old Trafford exit door sooner than expected.
