Sevilla to enhance title claims against Athletic Bilbao

4th placed Sevilla are still in the race for this season’s La Liga title following their recent 2-1 home win against Granada which became the host’s fifth league win on the trot in the Spanish top flight and they’re just three points behind the current La Liga leaders, Atletico Madrid, prior to this weekend’s action.

Previous wins against Atletico Madrid, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad and Levante have helped already assure Sevilla of a top four finish in this campaign and a place in next season’s Champions League as they hold a commanding and unassailable 17-point lead over 5th placed Real Sociedad.

The bigger picture shows that Sevilla have lost just two of their last 16 matches overall while form on home turf at their Estadio Ramón Sánchez has also been impressive.

The hosts have won nine of their last 10 games with their only aberration being a 2-0 loss to 3rd placed Barcelona.

Sevilla forward En-Nesyri (17 goals) is the one to watch for the hosts.

Athletic Bilbao moved up to 9th place on the La Liga table following a 2-2 draw at home with Real Valladolid in midweek which also extended their unbeaten run in La Liga to seven matches as they prepare for this tough trip to face Sevilla on Monday night.

However, Athletic Bilbao still haven’t made any headway in breaking into the top seven as six of these seven unbeaten games ended in draws and the visitors still find themselves seven points adrift of 7th placed Villarreal.

Overall results in recent times have been more stubborn than inspirational despite Athletic Bilbao losing just one of their last 13 matches as no fewer than nine of these 13 matches have ended in stalemate.

Eight of Athletic Bilbao’s 10 La Liga wins to date have also been captured on home turf at their San Mamés Barria, while away from home, Bilbao have managed to pick up just two wins on the road all season.

An away record of  2 wins, 7 draws and 7 defeats tells its own story as Athletic Bilbao have failed to find the necessary cutting edge on their travels and they’ve also faield to score in six of their 16 away matches to date this term as well.

A home win for Sevilla therefore seems to beckon here.
