Lyon will play host to Ligue 1 leaders, Lille, at their Groupama Stadium on Sunday evening with the hosts searching for a third league win on the trot as they continue their push for a top two finish and possibly even the Ligue 1 title itself.
With just three points separating them from Lille, there’s everything to play for here for the hosts who have recorded back-to-back wins against Angers 3-0 at home and a 2-1 win away at Nantes to keep them in the hunt not only for domestic honours but also a possible place in next season’s Champions League.
Recent results have been fairly mixed though for Lyon who have picked up four wins, drawn three and lost two.
Although, they’re still in the frame for European competition next term, while inconsistent results have also crept in at home too in recent weeks.
Four wins and three defeats suggest this could be a tough task against Lille and the hosts might just settle for a point here and take their chances in their remaining fixtures thereafter.
Lille have just about hung onto top spot in Ligue 1 despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Montpellier and their lead over 2nd placed PSG is now just a slender single point.
So, they know they must at least grab a point here but more like all three as PSG take on Metz this weekend.
However, this may be easier said than done as Lille have gone off the boil slightly in recent times with the visitors winning just four out of their last nine matches overall in the French top flight.
Lille had previously posted an impressive six-match winning streak from mid-January through to early February.
That helped the visitors to the summit of Ligue 1 but their subsequent nine matches have produced just four wins and has whittled their lead down to a single point over PSG.
Within this nine-game period, Lille have drawn four of these matches but they’ve been running hot on their travels where they’ve won nine out of their last 10 games on the road.
So, they’ll be confident that they can get a result of some sort here on Sunday.
Five of the last seven meetings between Lyon and Lille have ended in stalemate and this trend could continue on Sunday.
