Southampton host Burnley for an important clash at the bottom end of the Premier League table on Sunday, with both sides locked on 33 points.

Fourteenth-place Southampton currently lead fifteenth-place Burnley on goals scored, although both teams are just seven points clear of the relegation zone.

A run of just two defeats in 15 games across September and January saw Southampton cement their place at the top end of the Premier League table.

However, the Saints have since lost ten of their previous 12 league matches, picking up one win and one draw along the way.

Following six straight losses, Southampton have lost four of their last six outings – conceding countless goals in the process.

Having suffered a 5-2 loss to Manchester City, the Saints lost 2-1 to Brighton just before the international break.

It is also worth noting that only one team – West Brom (57) – have conceded more Premier League goals than Southampton (51) this season.

Following a difficult period of five defeats in eight games, it feels as though Burnley have turned things around recently.

Sean Dyche’s men have only lost one of their last eight matches, although they have drawn five games in that time (two wins).

After securing back-to-back 1-1 draw with Leicester and Arsenal, Burnley beat Everton 2-1 last time out, meaning they are currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten streak.

Having netted just 22 goals in 29 games, Burnley are the third-lowest scorers in the Premier League this season.

That said, let’s not forget that Dyche’s men boast the second-best defensive record in the bottom half of the standings.

Head-to-head: Southampton scraped a 1-0 win over Burnley in the reverse fixture at Turf Moor back in September.

However, the Saints have only beaten Burnley once in their previous eight meetings, with four Burnley wins and three draws coming in that time.

Team news: Will Smallbone, Oriol Romeu and Michael Obafemi are all currently injured for Southampton, although Danny Ings and Theo Walcott could return this weekend.

Ashely Barnes is ruled out for Burnley, while Robbie Brady, Kevin Long, Charlie Taylor and Jack Cork are all doubts.

With Southampton and Burnley battling for survival, both managers are likely to be happy to settle for a point on Sunday.

Forebet predicts that Southampton and Burnley will produce a low-scoring draw at St. Mary’s, with under 2.5 goals overall.
