The Segunda Division is nearing its climax and on Friday night, promotion chasers Almeria host Rayo Vallecano in a massive six-point match.

Almeria sit third in the league table and are just one point off of first-place Espanyol. A win for Los Rojiblancos would take them into first place until Sunday at the least – both Espanyol and Mallorca play on Sunday.

Rayo Vallecano are sixth and holding onto the final promotion playoff place. Los Rayo are coming off of 1-0 loss to Sporting Gijon. They are just one points above seventh-place Ponferradina.

Almeria won the reverse fixture against Rayo Vallecano this season, 1-0. The winning goal didn’t come until the 90th minute as Jorge Cuenca scored the winner at the death. Rayo Vallecano played just over 60 minutes with 10 men after Luis Advincula was sent off in the first half.

Los Rojiblancos are in good form heading into the game. They took 11 points from their last 18 on offer. It is the second-best total over the course of the last six Segunda games. They conceded a mere four goals during that time with 10 goals being scored.

Rayo Vallecano took only eight points from the last 18 on offer. They struggled to score goals and keep them out. Los Rayo scored eight times and allowed opponents to tally seven goals of their own.

Almeria are unbeaten in three straight games in the Segunda against Rayo Vallecano. Confidence will be high that the team can continue their great run of form and move to the top of the table.

Umar Sadiq Mesbah leads Almeria in goals with 15. He has accounted for 31% of the team’s goalscoring. Teammate Jose Corpas has 11 goals.

The duo has accounted for a whopping 54% of Almeria’s goals in 2020-21, helping the club tally the league’s second-most goals (48).

Rayo Vallecano have scored the league’s fourth-most goals (38). Isaac Camacho and Antonio Cortes have combined for 12 goals this season – six apiece. While goalscoring for UD Almeria has been mostly done by two players, Rayo Vallecano have had a team effort.

Almeria’s home form could be difference in a win and loss on Friday night. They are unbeaten in six straight games with three of those games ending in wins. However, back-to-back games at the Estadio Mediterráneo finished in draws.

Can Almeria win and move to the top of the table or will Rayo Vallecano finally end their winless run versus Los Rojiblancos?
