Sevilla meet Elche in midweek La Liga clash

Sevilla host Elche at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in midweek La Liga action on Wednesday night. Los Rojiblancos will cash-in their game in hand and aim to solidify their place in the top four.

Elche are 17th in La Liga, one point above the relegation zone. A win for the Green Striped Ones would give them some breathing space in the race for survival.

Sevilla are coming off of a Seville Derby win against Real Betis last weekend to end a poor run of form that coincided with them being eliminated from the Champions League. Although they are the superior team in terms of talent and league position, Sevilla lost 2-1 to Elche away in the reverse fixture.

Elche scored in the 70th minute through Raul Guti and doubled their lead six minutes later courtesy of Guido Carrillo. Sevilla didn’t get on the scoresheet until the 90th minute. Luuk de Jong scored the team’s only strike.

Julen Lopetegui’s team should be far better this week against the Green Striped Ones than they were in the reverse fixture. That reverse fixture occurred earlier this month as the team’s original game had been postponed.

Sevilla took 12 points from their last 18 on offer. They scored eight times while conceding just four times during that run of form. Two of those goals came against Elche.

The Green Striped Ones took six points from their last 18 possible. They were outscored by opponents 11-6. Elche are on a five-match losing streak away from home and it doesn’t bode well for a domestic double over Sevilla.

Lopetegui has two players on the team’s injury list going into the midweek clash. Fernando and Aleix Vidal are both listed as injured. Fernando has a groin problem that is likely to keep him sidelined until April. Vidal has a hamstring injury and is a doubt for the fixture.

Elche manager Fran Escriba has two players suffering from injuries but both could return for the fixture. Pedro Bigas and Roberto Correa are suffering from muscle injuries. The duo is in line to make a return to the team for the match.

Sevilla may have lost their previous game versus Elche just two weeks ago, but they should rebound with a win this time around. Sevilla should be buoyed by their derby win over Real Betis.

Like their previous fixture, expected both Sevilla and Elche to score goals and over 2.5 goals tallied in this fixture.
