We are now heading into the final stretch of most European football leagues. One league that still has plenty of issues still to decide is the English League One. One of the biggest unresolved issues is the promotion fight.
Two of the teams embroiled in that fight for a place in the Championship next season are Peterborough and Portsmouth, who meet on Tuesday night at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Despite an unconvincing recent run of league form, the home team still occupy that all-important second automatic promotion spot.
However, Darren Ferguson’s team are now just a point ahead of third-place Lincoln City after back-to-back league defeats against Burton Albion and Hull City. T
hey are still well-placed to go up automatically, as not only do they have a game on hand on Lincoln, but they have also played three fewer games than table-topping Hull.
In Jonson Clarke-Harris, Peterborough have a striker in form, as the 26-year-old has now scored eight times in his last nine league appearances.
Portsmouth are a bit further down the food chain when it comes to promotion, as Pompey are currently seventh-place in the table, outside the play-off spots courtesy of just two points.
A terrible run of recent League one form has led to the team from the south coast dropping out of the race for the automatic promotion spots. A defeat in the EFL trophy to Salford City at the weekend also saw the exit of head coach Kenny Jackett after four years in charge.
The visitors have struggled on their travels of late in the English third tier, as Portsmouth have lost three of their last four away games in League One. The omens are not good for that bad run to end in this clash.
Forebet predicts that Peterborough will boost their automatic promotion hopes by recording a victory in a high-scoring encounter.
