There is still so much left to play for in the Bundesliga this season. The fight for survival and European places take centre stage in Mainz on Sunday afternoon when the home side welcome top-six chasing Freiburg to OPEL Arena.
Mainz have given themselves a chance of avoiding relegation since the appointment of Bo Svenson as head coach. The Danish boss has made the strugglers harder to beat, as illustrated by just one defeat in their last five league outings.
A 0-0 draw at bottom of the table Schalke last time out may prove to be a missed opportunity for Mainz.
Even after the draw though, they are still just two points from safety and just a point adrift of 16th place Arminia Bielefeld.
If Mainz are to avoid the drop then their home form must improve, as a record of just two home wins in their last 12 outings at the OPEL Arena is a poor one.
Freiburg’s challenge for a European place for next season has rather floundered in recent weeks. However, Christian Streich’s team are still eighth place in the German top-flight table.
They are now five points behind sixth-place Dortmund in the race for a top-six finish after just one win in their last four outings in the Bundesliga.
Last time out the team from the Back Forest suffered a 3-0 home defeat against title-chasing RB Leipzig. This game should represent much less of a challenge for Streich’s team than that offered by Die Roten Bullen, though.
Freiburg have been inconsistent on their travels in the Bundesliga of late, as they have won just one of their previous four away matches in the German top-flight. That one win came in their last game, though, a highly creditable 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen.
Forebet predicts that Freiburg will keep alive their slim hopes of continental football for next season by recording a victory in a low-scoring outing.
