Sporting CP are in a very promising position to win the Portuguese top-flight title for the first time in 19 years. Ruben Amorim’s team head into Friday night’s home game with Santa Clara nine points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga.
The Lions faced a major test of their credentials last time out as they visited reigning champions Porto and picked up a goalless draw.
Although the draw ended a six-game winning run, it also maintained their 21-game unbeaten run in the Portuguese top-flight.
The game also saw Sporting CP produce another stellar defensive display, as the team from the Portuguese capital have now conceded just once in their last seven matches in the Primeira Liga.
At the other end of the pitch, young attacking midfielder Bruno Goncalves is making a name for himself in the goalscoring stakes, as the 22-year-old has scored 14 goals in 19 Primeira Liga appearances.
His displays have inevitably lead to comparisons with Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who made a name for himself at Sporting before his switch to the Premier League giants.
Santa Clara are seventh place in the Primeira Liga table, ten points from the European spots and nine clear of the relegation places. It seems unlikely that the visitors will have much to play for unless they have a major swing in their fortunes either way.
Their recent run of form in the Portuguese top-flight rather sums up their form this season, as they have won three, lost three and drew one of their last seven league matches.
Santa Clara’s recent away form has been similarly mixed, as they have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games on their travels.
