Bordeaux to face tough task against Lille

Bordeaux’s recent promising four-match unbeaten run in the French top flight came to a sudden end on the weekend when they were handed a 2-1 defeat away at 2nd placed Lyon and although they return to their Stade Matmut-Atlantique for this Wednesday night’s clash, they’ll be up against the Ligue 1 leaders, Lille.

Recent wins against Lorient, Nice and Angers had seemingly set Bordeaux on course for a possible challenge for a top five spot but the loss to Lyon has resulted in Bordeaux dropping down to a mid-table position of 10th place and they’re now four points adrift of 5th placed Rennes.

Results on home turf at their Stade Matmut-Atlantique have been reasonable but also slightly inconsistent, particularly of late as the hosts have won three and lost three within their last six matches at home in Ligue 1.

Victories over Brest, Lorient and Angers have been offset by losses against Montpellier, Saint-Etienne and Reims and these last six matches at home have yielded just one clean sheet; in addition, Bordeaux have lost the last three meetings on the trot against Lille.

Lille captured a fourth league win on the trot on Sunday when they registered a 1-0 home win over Dijon at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy which not only handed them a valuable three points but also maintained the visitors’ position at the summit of Ligue 1 too.

Previous wins against Nimes, Reims and Rennes should also serve as further evidence that Lille are a force to be reckoned with and having lost just twice throughout this season’s campaign, the visitors are still in with a decent chance of making a serious challenge for the Ligue 1 title.

Lille have lost just once on their travels as well as the visitors have won six of their 10 away matches to date this term with a 3-2 loss away at Brest being their only aberration in an otherwise solid season to date.

Along with keeping five clean sheets on their travels, Lille have also won their last four matches on the road on the trot with victories collected at Dijon, Montpellier, Nimes and Reims, while three of these four wins were also to nil.

Lille have held the upper hand over Bordeaux in recent exchanges and Wednesday night could be no exception.
