Goals expected to be scarce when Brest play host to Metz
Stade Brestois vs FC Metz - 31/01/2021
2320
The action continues in the French top flight on Sunday afternoon when Brest play host to Metz at the Stade Francis-Le Blé with the hosts no doubt looking to avoid a fourth defeat on the trot in Ligue 1 which has left them in 13th place.
Indeed, Brest have lost four out of their last five matches overall in the domestic top flight following defeats against Lens, PSG, Rennes and Reims and although they recorded a -0 home win over Nice during this period too, the hosts have been unable to prevent themselves slipping down the Ligue 1 table.
However, it should be taken into account that three of these four defeats were incurred away from home while on home turf at their Stade Francis-Le Blé, overall form and results have been reasonable enough with Brest losing just three of their 10 matches to date.
Six victories at home to date include notable wins against 4th placed Monaco and 2nd placed Lille, while also winning the last three meetings on the trot against their visitors, Metz.
Metz lifted themselves up into 8th place on the Ligue 1 ladder courtesy of a 2-0 home win over Nantes last weekend which followed a valuable but somewhat unexpected 1-0 victory away from home at high-flying Lyon.
Overall form has been encouraging of late for Metz who have suffered just the one defeat out of their last eight matches which came in the shape of a narrow 1-0 defeat away from home at Rennes just before Christmas, but the visitors have since put together a four-match unbeaten sequence.
This improved run of results has also coincided with a tightening of their defence which has produced under 2.5 goals in seven of these last eight matches, while on their travels, nine of Metz’s 10 away matches so far this season have also produced under three goals per match.
With just three wins on the road though so far this season, an away win at Brest may seem unlikely, particularly as Brest have registered wins against Monaco and Lille, so the best that Metz appear to hope for here is perhaps a draw.
Further evidence that goals may be a little thin on the ground here is that each of the previous six meetings have all resulted in under 2.5 goals.
