Atletico Madrid to secure the points against Valencia

Could it be seventh heaven for Sunday’s hosts, Atletico Madrid, following six league wins on the trot in La Liga as the home side look to make it seven on the trot when they play host to Valencia at their Estadio Wanda Metropolitano?

This recent impressive winning streak has seen Atletico pick up valuable wins against Elche, Real Sociedad, Getafe, Deportivo Alaves, Sevilla and Eibar while also helping Diego Simeone’s side open up an important seven-point lead at the top of La Liga over local rivals, Real Madrid.

It was their rivals, Real Madrid, though, that have inflicted Atletico’s only defeat so far this season which was away from home, but results on home turf at their Estadio Wanda Metropolitano have been exemplary.

Eight wins from their nine matches played at home to date in this campaign underlines Atletico Madrid’s intent of picking up the La Liga title which has been underpinned by a rock-solid defensive unit which has kept no fewer than seven clean sheets at home so far.

Valencia remain in 14th place on the La Liga ladder after drawing 1-1 at home with lowly Osasuna but in truth, Valencia were fortunate to walk away with a point as Osasuna went close on several occasions, hitting the post in the latter stages of the match.

The visitors were wholly uninspiring and showed why they’ve managed to pick up just one win out of their last 10 matches, which came in the shape of a 1-0 win away at 16th placed Real Valladolid, while also losing three and drawing six.

Valencia have captured just two wins on the road so far this season from their nine outings which is another disappointing return to date for the visitors, and although they also held Barcelona to a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp, we can safely say that Barcelona are not the side they used to be.

The bigger picture shows that Valencia have won just two out of their last 20 away matches in La Liga, a poor sequence of results which also includes failing to score in eight of these 20 on the road.

This doesn’t bode well for this upcoming trip where they’ll be up against Atletico Madrid’s near unimpregnable defensive unit which has been the basis of Atletico’s success to date.
