Augsburg claimed a narrow 1-0 win away at Cologne last time out, a result that moved them above Sunday’s guests in the Bundesliga table. Stuttgart gave a good account of themselves at home to RB Leipzig but still ended up losing the game 1-0.
Just a single point and one position separate Augsburg and Stuttgart in the Bundesliga table heading into Sunday’s clash. The visitors have a better goal difference than their hosts, but Augsburg are the side with more points on the board.
When these two teams last locked horns in April 2019, Augsburg ran out emphatic 6-0 winners in their own backyard. The previous four games between the two clubs had been tight and tense affairs with each producing under 1.5 goals.
It seems unlikely that the pair will be divided by such a big margin this time around; in fact, a much tighter 90-minutes is expected.
Under 2.5 goals have been produced in three of Augsburg’s last four matches in league and cup as well as in each of Stuttgart’s last three fixtures, which points towards Sunday’s clash being a low-scoring affair. In fact, neither the hosts nor the visitors have scored more than one-goal in any of their last three fixtures.
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign and will now miss Sunday’s match against Stuttgart through suspension. Framberger, Finnbogason, Jense and Moravek are also expected to miss the game due to injury.
The visitors could be without the services of Mola, Didavi, Egloff, Al Ghaddioui and Thommy for the trip to Augsburg, though some of those players are nearing a comeback.
The form of both clubs heading into this weekend’s match has been hit and miss. Augsburg have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six fixtures, while Stuttgart have lost two, won three and drawn one during that same period.
In terms of a most likely result on Sunday, a draw looks a good bet between two sides that have performed to a very similar level so far this season. As far as a final scoreline in concerned, a 1-1 looks a decent bet given the amount of low-scoring games both teams have been involved in lately.
