We have reached the quarter final stage of the English League Cup and on Tuesday the 22nd of December Arsenal will play Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.

This competition presents the first opportunity to win a major trophy for both teams this season and the match will be played as a one-off.

Arsenal come into the game having lost 2-1 at Everton in the Premier League on Saturday. Having fallen a goal behind at Goodison Park, Arsenal got back into the match with an equaliser from the penalty spot but conceded the decisive goal from a corner just before half-time.

That result means Arsenal failed to win any of their last 3 games in all competitions. In fact, the only victories to come in their last 11 matches have all been in the Europa League. If you look at domestic competition, Arsenal failed to win any of their last 7 games.

In terms of the League Cup, Arsenal defeated Leicester City 2-0 away before overcoming Liverpool via a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw at Anfield.

Trends show Arsenal have been struggling to score goals in recent matches and they have found the back of the net just 3 times in their last 7 domestic games. Keeping a clean sheet has also become a problem and The Gunners have conceded at least one goal in each of their last 7 matches in all competitions.

Manchester City travel to London having defeated Southampton 1-0 away from home in the Premier League on Saturday. It was a tough match for Pep Guardiola’s team but a goal in the first half from Raheem Sterling was enough to take maximum points.

It was an important victory for Manchester City who were previously held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against West Bromwich Albion.

Trends show Manchester City are undefeated in their last 8 games in all competitions. They have picked up 5 wins in those 8 matches and you must go back to the 21st of November to find the last time they lost a game which was at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

That has been the only defeat for Manchester City in their last 18 games in all competitions.

They are undefeated in their last 4 away fixtures and have seen under 2.5 goals in all 4 matches. Manchester City have scored only 2 goals in their last 5 away games in all competitions but have kept a clean sheet in the last 4 on the road.

Team news and Arsenal are still without suspended midfielder Granit Xhaka. Central defender Gabriel is available again following suspension but Thomas Partey is doubtful due to a muscle injury.

Manchester City are without central defender Eric García plus Gabriel Jesus and Aymeric Laporte are doubts.

Both managers may be forced to freshen up their starting XI for this game and it is Manchester City who have the greater strength in depth.

This is a game that could see over 2.5 goals scored, with the visiting team coming out on top and progressing to the semi final.
