Can Marseille strength their Ligue 1 title credentials against Rennes?
2409

Ligue 1 is wide open after 14 matchdays and seven teams are within six points of the top of the table. Lille moved into first place on matchday 14 with a 2-1 win against Bordeaux coupled with Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 loss to Lyon.

Andre Villas-Boas' Marseille are title hopefuls and sit just two points off of Lille heading into a midweek clash against Rennes. The French giants have taken 27 points from 36 possible. Compared to their title rivals, Marseille have two games in hand, which could lead to the club lifting the Ligue 1 trophy.

Marseille are on a nine-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1 with each of their last six league games finishing in victory. OM face off with Rennes on Wednesday night at the Roazhon Park.

Rennes were expected to be a team fighting for a top spot this season, but things haven’t come off for them. The Black and Red go into the matchday 15 game in eighth place with 22 points from 52 possible. They are still just seven points off of first place and six from the top-three, however.

Marseille are unbeaten in six straight games in all competitions against Rennes. Only two of those matches finished in wins. Last season, Marseille claimed a 1-1 draw at home, coming from a goal down at halftime.

Their second meeting ended in a Marseille win, 1-0, with the goal coming in the second period. Marseille’s last win against Rennes at Roazhon Park came in 2017-18 in Ligue 1 by a score of 3-0.

Rennes are coming off of a 1-0 weekend win against Nice. The victory has the Black and Red back on track ending a four-match winless run in the league.

Five players occupy manager Julian Stephan’s injury list. Romain Del Castillo, Alfred Gomis, Sehrou Guirassy, Jonas Martin, and Daniele Rugani are all suffering from various fitness issues and all are unlikely to appear versus Marseille.

Marseille won 2-1 against Monaco at home at the weekend. Despite being out possessed, the Marseille defence stood strong and led the team to victory.

Villas-Boas will be without Dmitri Payet due to a red card suspension. Jordan Amavi is out with an injury while Nemanja Radonjic is out until the end of the month with a muscle strain.

Marseille are playing well and should get a big win away against Rennes in midweek. Villas-Boas' team will snatch a victory in a low-scoring game versus Rennes. The victory could take OM to the top of the Ligue 1 table if results elsewhere go their way.
