Colombia and Uruguay set for stalemate on CONMEBOL WQ matchday 3

Colombia started off CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying in fine fashion collecting four points from six possible. After smashing Venezuela 3-0, Colombia drew 2-2 with Chile thanks to a second-half stoppage-time goal from Radamel Falcao.

On matchday 3, Uruguay arrive in Colombia in need of points. Uruguay are sixth in the standings with three points from six possible. Oscar Tabarez continues to rely on ageing players including Luis Suarez, Diego Godin, and Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayans are outside of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying places courtesy of goal difference. A win or draw could see them enter the top five.

Uruguay gained a 2-1 win versus Chile on matchday 1, but fell to a shock away loss to Ecuador 4-2 on matchday 2. They were down 4-0 after 75 minutes. Luis Suarez scored two penalties late in the game to make the scoreline more flattering.

Suarez has scored three of Uruguay’s four goals in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying. The Sky Blues need Cavani, Rodrigo Bentacur, and Diego Rossi to step up and get goals.

The problem with Uruguay is their golden generation is coming to the end of the line. There are not enough players coming through, especially players with international experience.

Colombia and Uruguay have played 41 times since first playing in 1945. Uruguay have posted a 19W-9D-13L record against Colombia. Although Uruguay have claimed more wins, Colombia are on a two-match unbeaten run versus the Sky Blues.

Colombia claimed a 3-0 win in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying and a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture. The good form exhibited by Los Cafeteros should see them get a result on matchday 3.

Uruguay are –1 in goal difference having scored just four times while conceding five goals. Godin and Martin Caceres are both called into the team and on the wrong side of 30. The ageing defenders may not make it to the next World Cup and Tabarez needs to find replacements.

Federico Valverde, Diego Laxalt, and Maxi Gomez are all out of action due to injury. The amount of football being played has taken its toll on player fitness.

Colombia have golden generation currently featuring James Rodriguez, Luis Muriel, and Duvan Zapata. Falcao was not called into the side for the international break due to injury. Jhon Cordoba, Stefan Medina, Santiago Arias, and Yairo Moreno are all out of the team due to injury.

Matchday 3 should see Colombia and Uruguay finish in a stalemate. The two powerhouses of South American football should cancel each other out with a draw and under 2.5 goals scored.
