Brazil head into this week’s CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match versus Peru as the world’s No. 3 ranked team. The Brazilians kick started their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win versus Bolivia, but now face a strong Peru team.

Manager Tite’s team didn’t finish out 2019 well. They claimed just one win in their last four games of the year. That victory came against South Korea, 3-0, but prior to that win, Brazil drew versus Senegal and Nigeria. They also suffered a defeat to Argentina, 1-0.

Peru claimed a creditable 2-2 draw versus Paraguay in their opening CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match. Andre Carillo scored twice for Peru in that game to lead the team back from a 2-1 deficit.

Brazil have dominated their series of games versus Peru. They claimed a 33W-9D-5L record against the Peruvians. Brazil and Peru first met in 1936 and their most recent clash came in September 2019.

Their 2019 match ended in a shock 1-0 victory to Peru. It was just their fifth win ever versus Brazil. Luis Abram’s 85th-minute goal gave Peru the victory.

Other than that win, Peru’s form since the 2019 Copa America Final has been up and down. Brazil and Peru met in the Copa American Final from that edition with the former claiming a 3-1 win. It followed on from a 5-0 thrashing of Peru in the group stage.

Since defeating Brazil in 2019, Peru played just four times on the international stage with two games ending in draws and two in losses.

Brazil’s 5-0 win against Bolivia on matchday 1 of qualifying saw Roberto Firmino score twice. Firmino’s form for Liverpool has been up and down. It is hoped that his two-goal performance will carry over to the Merseyside Derby four days after facing Peru.

Although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, Neymar was a major factor for Brazil. Tite is likely to play Neymar on the left and Everton on the right of Firmino against Peru. Philippe Coutinho played on the right of a midfield three versus Bolivia and it worked well as midfielder scored.

Peru are the decided underdog going into the game. They have a difficult road ahead of them with Chile and Argentina coming up in November. Peru snatched a win the last time they faced off with Brazil.

Peru could once again get on the scoresheet and claim a point versus the mighty Brazil this week in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.
