On Thursday night, Scottish champions Celtic travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina to face Sarajevo in a play-off for a place in the group stages of the Europa League.

The home team has made a promising start to their campaign, as not only have they made it to the play-off round, they are also top of their domestic league too. Vinko Marinovic’s team have now won their last five games in all competitions.

One negative is that Sarajevo kicked off the campaign in the Champions League, but exited the competition at the second qualifying round after defeat to Dinamo Brest. They beat Buducnost of Montenegro in the last round to set up this tie.

The victory ended a four-game winless run in the Europa League for the home side. The game also followed a high-scoring trend for Sarajevo in the Europa League, as 13 of their last 14 matches in the competition have produced over 2.5 goals.

Sarajevo have struggled for wins on home soil in European football’s secondary competition of late, winning just two of their previous nine home matches in the Europa League.

Similarly to their opponents, Celtic kicked off their campaign in the Champions League. However, the Hoops suffered a 2-1 defeat against Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros in the second qualifying round.

The visitors set up this clash by recording a 1-0 win over Riga in the last round. The run ended a three-game winless run in the Europa League for the team from Glasgow. The visitors made it to the last 32 of the competition but suffered a 4-2 aggregate defeat against Copenhagen.

Celtic’s recent away record in the Europa League has been highly inconsistent, as the Hoops have won just four of their previous eight matches on their travels.
